"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; 'Tis dearness only that gives everything its value."
~ Thomas Paine

"The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just."
~Abraham Lincoln
Intro
October—Pastor Appreciation Month

All pastors face an uphill battle each day often characterized by weariness and discouragement.  Yet they hold fast to their dreams.  They, like the Apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:14, “press on toward the goal; to win the prize.
”Most of you know that October is Pastor Appreciation Month.  This is an opportunity for you to say “Thank You” to our pastor, Rev. Jeff Matthews, and to recall the times he has stood on the front lines of the spiritual battle for you and your family.  This is our chance to say thank you, we love you, and we are praying for you, your family, and your ministry.
What can we do to say thanks to Pastor Jeff?  A simple card of encouragement, an invitation to breakfast or lunch, a promise to pray for him and his family, how about washing his car, or surprising him on a snowy Sunday morning and clearing the snow from his car after the service.  These are all wonderful statements of love and appreciation.  It cost nothing to say, “Thank You for everything you are doing.  I can see the Lord working through you.”  These words mean so very much to our pastor.
Don’t Pastor Jeff and his family deserve this kind of recognition?  Do something about it this month.
Yours in Christ,

Don Heffner

Chair, Pastor-Parish Relations

AN EXCITING EXPERIMENT FOR OUR CHURCH

A NEW EARLY WORSHIP SERVICE TIME

BEGINNING DAYLIGHT SAVINGS SUNDAY

OCTOBER 30,  AT 8:45 A.M.

After many months of studying our morning worship and Sunday School time structure, the Administrative Council at their September meeting decided to try moving our early service back 15 minutes to 8:45.  The reason for this change is to assure that the important ministry of the Sunday School will have time to function well. The first proposal of a change in time was brought to the Administrative Council in November of 2004 by the Education Team.  It has been debated off and on.  The Pastor-Parish Team has been hearing concerns that the Sunday School time is too rushed.  The proposal was again introduced at our last meeting by the Worship Team. Our prayer is that we can try this experiment and see how it works.  We know it is early, and it will be an adjustment for people with small children and also people who need a while for their bodies to get going in the morning.  If we can see that it is only a 15 minutes change that may solve one of the concerns brought by many parts of our church. There may be some bugs to work out as we make the changes.  Please be patient as we face each one of the challenges, and try to solve them.  The Worship Team will monitor how the new times are working and the Administrative Council will analyze the experiment in December. The new time will begin on Sunday morning October 30, 2005.  It is the day when Daylight Saving time begins, so we hope it will make the first Sunday of our experiment a little easier.

MAN IN THE MIRROR — STUDY FOR MEN

Led by Rev. Jeff, on Saturday Mornings, at 7:30 a.m.
At the church, Rolls and Coffee!

The purpose of this study book is to help men understand the person who stares back at them in the mirror each morning.  It has 24 chapters that talk about the most difficult problems that men face in their everyday lives. The hope is that this will be an inter-generational study that includes our high school guys to our older men.  The chapters are about 12 pages long with a page of questions in the back.
A few of the chapters are: The Secret of Job Contentment
Broken Relationships, Children: How To Avoid Regrets, Pride, Anger, How To Decide What’s Important, Integrity — What’s The Price?, How Can A Man Change?

The book has sold over 2 million copies.  It allows for great discussion and insight.  It is a great way for older men to share the things that have worked or not worked in their own lives.
The reason for the early time is to allow men to get their kids to 9:00 soccer games, and not pull away from quality time with family.  The group will start Saturday, October 1.

In our Sunday Schools classes, men of about the same ages share together.  One of the strengths of this group is guys from high school age to 80 grow from this book and the sharing that takes place.

The beauty of this study is that each chapter stands alone.  If you can not come for a week, you do not get behind.  This is an exciting challenge for the men of our church.  Our prayer is that we can become a unit of men who continue to challenge each other in living our faith.

Youth

Greetings from your Green Valley Youth Leaders!

We all had a fun time at the youth group kick-off picnic and we had a great turnout!  Thanks to all who came and helped out!  A special thanks to rev. Jeff and Joyce for delivering the message and sharing in the fund!

This is going to be an exciting year for our youth!  We are going to be starting a project this fall of reconstructing/redecorating the Youth room downstairs in the church.

First, we would like to ask the church to pray for our project as we map out our plan, seek donations for materials/equipment, and begin to work on the room.

We would like to ask the church for any “handyman” kind of guys that would like to help us with our reconstruction (carpentry/carpet installation, etc.) also anyone that is skilled at electrical work to help us install some new light fixtures, and anyone with artistic talent to help us design our walls.  We would greatly appreciate your expertise!

We do have a limited budget, so we would like to ask anyone in our church that would like to donate funds or items that are new or in good condition from the following list to let Cathy or Carlo know (330-896-8638).

Snack/Juice Bar Table (to go by sink) Big Screen TV/Flat Screen Dart Board

Stereo/CD Player/Boom Box Game System/PS2/X-Box Digital Camera

Booths (like in a restaurant) DVD & VCR Player/Movies Air Hockey Table

Refrigerator Large Chalkboard/Corkboard Foosball Table

Microwave Ping Pong Table/Billiard Table Bar Stools

Christian Music Collection/CD’s

Sport Balls: Basket balls, footballs, kick balls.

Funds for:  Paint, Carpet, supplies, lighting, furniture/couches/chairs, etc.

We would like to give a big “Thank You” to Vern & Joyce Smith for donating and preparing our delicious youth meal Sept. 18th!  We all appreciate your work, love and service for our youth!

Anyone that would like to donate a meal for our youth one Sunday evening, please let us know. Thank you
